Loved To Bits #9...
Our ninth Loved To Bits project is completed & it’s gone through a bit of a transformation - it’s gone from a 235cm Floor-To-Ceiling Tomcat to a 185cm Wall Mounted unit, been turned upside down, had Acrylic End Caps replaced with Recessed Top & Wrapped End, an internal shelf added & two contrasting coir patched sections added to replace heavily worn areas.
We did initially think we were only going to replace the top section but half way through the adaptation we decided that it was best to replace a worn section at the base as well, which meant that the unit ended up slightly shorter than first planned & if we had spotted this earlier we would have left the unit the right way up as well so that the access holes were in slightly higher positions - we didn’t so also had to add in a shelf below the lower access hole as in turning the unit upside down this access hole would have had a very deep compartment down the the floor.
An interesting note is that the natural coir that we were using 17 years ago had a much narrower weave than the current supply as can be seen in the last photo - the patched pieces also have a narrow weave as these were grey dyed samples that are 10+ years old, which have faded over the years.
If we are honest this Loved To Bits project turned into a bit of a sentimental affair because we wanted to save what was one of our first units & given the general wear we probably would have just cleaned up the unit to get a bit more life out of it rather than a complete adaptation - we haven’t made our minds up what to do with the unit as yet so it will sit in the studio for the time being as a reminder that the skip is not always the last resort for these types of units.
